What is the Rollins Road Gateway Project?
Several alternatives were evaluated during the study phase, including the potential for adding ramps on IL 83 to continue to travel at it current elevation. However, in the end, the preferred alternative is a lowering of the Rollins Road and IL 83 intersection with a new bridge to carry the CN/Metra Railroad over the intersection.
The new intersection will include new traffic signals with vastly improved traffic conditions. Additional turning lanes will be added on all four legs of the Rollins and IL83 intersection to better accommodate turning movements. With the addition of turn lanes and the elimination of the delays, this will substantially improve the traffic moving through the intersection. Hainesville Road will be shifted west to improve the storage in the intersection and the entrances to the signals to the shopping malls will be consolidated into a single, well functioning entrance. One of the goals of the team was to minimize impacts to the travelling public. In order to accomplish this, additional land will be acquired to the south of the intersection. This extra land will be used to construct a temporary reroute, allowing traffic to travel through the construction zone in the same configuration as existing conditions.
